It's happening

This is the week I look forward to the other 51 out of the year. When fall is in full bloom, most of the trees are noticeably sporting their colors, and football season is fully under way.

Yes, it's Southern Cal week.

If it weren't for my team's end of the bargain not being held up for just about a decade now, it would still be considered the greatest rivalry in all of college football. Instead, I doubt many would let it crack the top 5. This is probably more because of their hate for Notre Dame and unwillingness to give them credit for anything than any true shittiness of the game, but so be it.

FWIW, my top 5, based on today's college football climate:

1.) Texas/Oklahoma - The Red River Rivalry has made and broken the National Championship dreams of these two teams every year since Vince Young was still in college. I'm far from a Big 12 fan, but this is as big as it gets anymore.

2.) OSU/Michigan - Personally, I think Big 10 games are a snoozefest. This game always gets hyped to shit by one side or the other, even though Michigan has been balled up and pooped since... I can't even remember how long. It's been a while though. Bold prediction: expect the pooping on to end this year. I'm not saying they are going to win, but OSU is just that bad offensively that they may let Michigan stay in this one.

3.) Alabama/LSU - Nick Saban. Combine that storyline with the fact that the SEC really is just more fun to watch than any of the integer conferences, and you have the #3 best rivalry.

4.) Florida/whoever-they-are-playing-this-week - Until Tim "Jesus" Tebow is gone, that school will be hyped to shit by the media, giving every team on their schedule plenty of reason to hate them come Saturday. In the end, Meyer is just too good and has had his pick of players since as long as he has been there. I don't see the domination going anywhere soon.

5.) ND/USC - If you didn't think I would have this in the top 5, you're insane. October 15, 2005 will be a date that will always be remembered in my heart. My junior homecoming. We ate at the now defunct Waston Bros. Good choice, considering we all temporarily ditched the dates to watch the last 5 minutes of one of the greatest games of the 21st century. Freakin' Reggie Bush....

I can't watch this much, but for anyone who wants to relive it, be my guest:

A few tweets:

1.) I'm starting to realize why saying I am in engineering is usually greeted with an "OOoooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhh......." A.k.a the hdub is off the charts.

2.) This Saturday is one of the greatest days of the near, the start of college football season.

3.) I'm finally starting to get excited to see the blue and gold on the field again.

4.) My goal for the year is not to make the games make/break my mood for (and thus quality of) the entire weekend.

Keep livin' the dream everyone. A small wave of schools are still moving in so I want to give a big best of luck to everyone on the new year.

Except for the OSU and USC football teams. You all suck.

It's Not That Complicated

README - I realize the regulars here won't care much about this, but (a) it's better than nothing, and (b) no offense - it isn't intended for you anyways, so take it or leave it. I don't blame ya.

On Notre Dame: A lot has been said lately about the need to focus on improving the running game drastically this offseason. Some have even said to the point of 200 yards per game and above. I don't necessarily think that's true. Let’s look at every season going back to 1995 (excluding 1998 because weirdly UND doesn’t have cumulative season stats for that year); a time spanning Weis, Ty, Davie, and the last two seasons of Lou. Four coaches, four coaching styles (for better or worse), and over a decade of football. By looking at yards per game, and a net win count (Wins-Losses, ties count for a half a loss), one number seems to arise as a Maginot Line of sorts for a successful season – at least offensively.

400 yards. It doesn’t necessarily matter how you get there, but reaching 400 yards or more per game has resulted in a significantly better net win count than under 400 yards. Admittedly, there are two clear exceptions to this rule in Ty’s “smoke and mirrors” first season in 2002 and Matt LoVecchio’s starting season in 2000.

Lou did it by rushing over 200 yards per game in ’95 and ’96. Ten years later, Weis passed significantly more, but still got around there this first two seasons (with, somewhat fittingly, a disappointing 2006 season coming in just under 400 ypg)

What does it all mean? Don’t expect 200 yards rushing per game. Weis doesn’t need to get 200 yards per game under his system and honestly it would be a crime to not utilize the talent in our starting 3 wide receivers – two potential All-Americans in Tate and Floyd and what will be a highly contested 3rd spot this season by talented but unproven players. At running back, simply a load of talented unproven players.
Do, however, hold Weis and this ’09 team to a standard of reaching at least 4.0 yards per carry. Taking last season’s stats and subbing the dismal 3.2 yards per carry out with a respectable but far from great 4 yards per carry puts the team at about 135 rushing yards per game and – more importantly – 380 total yards per game, or about two more screen passes per game from 400. 4 YPC is not some insurmountable number to achieve in one offseason, it is a baseline. Also, I fully expect the passing game to continue to improve as it’s players age.

The quick version: Based off previous years, a 400 YPG offense combined with even an average Notre Dame defense will generally result in 9-10 wins. This can be achieved simply by a marginal increase in passing productivity and – more significantly – averaging at least 4 YPC. While an historically bad schedule may allow some leniency in these numbers, that is counteracted by the generally held assumption (on NDN at least) that 9 wins just won’t cut it.

And the list gets longer...

For the first time owning a PS3 I can honestly say that I have a bonafide game wishlist. Not my typical "on if I were to win a million dollars I would buy this this this and this," I always have one of those.

No no, this is a list of games that if you find me in a weak moment I just may go out and buy. And I'll definitely end up buying more than one. At $60 a pop, that is no small statement. The list is as follows (in a somewhat particular order):

1.) Killzone 2 - Holy shit. Granted, I don't have a 360 so I have actually never played Gears of War and my Halo 3 time is limited, but after playing just the demo for this, I'm thinking we may have a new best FPS for consoles. Unlike over 90% of games in this generation, the gameplay is on par with the graphics. And oh (again..) holy shit (/again...) is that saying something:

Picture this at a cool 60 fps. Try not to wet the bed. (Click for a higher res)

Video - The framerate isn't that bad in game:

2.) Little Big Planet - After getting the tease of a weekend long beta play, I'm really surprised this one isn't already on my shelf. Either way, still one of my favorite games out currently (with NO BLOOD OR GUTS OR FOOTBALLS EVEN!, how 'bout that ma!). I dig the creation capabilities and since release they have really embraced the download-able content (DLC) scene with weekly (usually free) releases of new goodies. A good game just gets better.

3.) Skate 2 - This one intriques me. Usually the skating genre is Tony Hawk's to lay claim to, but this new franchise is starting to make some serious ground and worry the Tony Hawkers. The motion-based controls seem somewhat gimmicky to me, but I'm not gonna knock it until I've tried it.

4.) Every Rock Band song available for download - God, I like this game. Consider me the next Ringo once MTV game's next rhythm game comes out (consider it number 3.5 on this list). It damn well better support Rock Band "instruments".

5.) Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising - I loved the first game in this uber-realistic "military strategy" (they don't like to be called shooters) series when I played it on Xbox, it just looked like something that was released before technology would fully allow it to achieve its objective. Maybe the power of the consoles in this generation will really make this shine. Sadly though, this is the type of game that is best bought on the PC so the mod scene can really get a hold of it and make it amazing. It seems like it could still fare well on the consoles though... we'll see.

6.) Watchmen: The End is Nigh - This would be a bit of a fanboy purchase more than anything. I can't imagine it being much more than a made for the movie release type game. Those types of games generally are the worst types of games. Save Goldeneye... ah sweet sweet Goldeneye. The price seems a bit steep for a "PSN" release too; they generally hover near $10.00, slightly more than a Blockbuster rental.

7.) NCAA Football '10 - Premature? Hell yes. I have high hopes (slash expectations) that EA will finally get it right on their third or fourth or whatever it is now year on this generation. '09 was right on the cusp of the greatness of the old PS2 games, but still no I-AA teams, playbook creator, etc. kept it from being perfect. Fix a few of these things and we could have a winner. Or create a Head Coach for college football. The differences between coaching in college and the pros are immense (ask Charlie) and it could make for one hell of a sports simulation.

the bengals are terrible

they can win out from now until 2010 and I will still hold that fact to be true. At best they will be 2-14.

Yes, at best.

The Browns will finish off about a .500 team, as will the Patriots.

Stone.

Bringin it to the States

A while back I posted an extremely well done Nike commercial that was only released in Europe, no doubt because of it's focus on soccer. It seems that they have brought the idea over here for OUR version of football. While this one loses a little in going with the majestic, epic music - one thing I really liked about the European version was the peppier mood - it is still very good.

Kudos to a marketing group that really doesn't need any more:

EDIT:
For some reason I can't figure out if I really did post the soccer video before. Either way, here it is. Far and away my favorite Nike commercial, and that's saying a lot.

Woes of fantasy football

I am cursed:

No kidding, this was my fantasy team at the beginning of the year:

Yes it's a weird roster set up, I know.

QB: Tom Brady - shit.
RB: Julius Jones - considering he was going to be the go-to guy with Morrice injured, he has been very unimpressive.
RB: Chris Johnson - the rookie on the Titans, the one player I'm not totally disappointed in.
RB/WR: Reggie Bush - Don't get it twisted, he's a wide reciever/utility player; not a running back.
WR: Braylon Edwards - Finally got his head out of his ass on Monday, we'll he where he goes.
TE/WR: Roy Williams - Just traded after a highly unproductive year.
TE: Kellen Winslow - Just was released from the hospital for a pretty serious non-football illness.
DP: Patrick Willis - OK I lied, he hasn't been bad either. Still, a defensive player isn't winning any games.
D: Giants - Injuries and no Strahan has left a mark.

I kid you not.
Cursed I tell ya.

5 Straight Days of college football

and not one game i truly care about.

this is like getting a brand new car only to discover that the last person to give it a test drive let out a really good shart before giving up the keys

My not so professional opinion:

- Pitt lost to Bowling Green. Hopefully that just means they suck and not that they lost their focus already and will be perfect the rest of the season. LeSean McCoy scares me. He is good...

- Michigan sucks. No really, it's not some fun slogan anymore... from what I saw Saturday... they really really suck. Threet/Sheridan are not good throwing quarterbacks, let alone spread option running QBs. McGuffie is a freshman. If their defense lays a turd like they did in the first half, they are in big trouble.... im talking 3-9 trouble...

- I'm tired of these warmup games. Maybe Chris Wells getting hurt is karma.

- USC is going to be very, very, very good this year. Their quarterback, Sanchez, should have started all year last year. Ruh roh.

Moe Mashed Us Again

Went to the nati and watched the Vikes lose a heartbreaker to longtime rival Moeller, 27-17. I came away with these observatiosn:

* Nippert Stadium (and UC in general) really is a very nice venue. I may have to try to get down there for a UC football game sometime, I feel like when the place is packed it really makes some noise.

* Spencer Ware is good, but really not a thrower. Granted there were a few off throws that were more of a play miscommunication than anything, but he was constantly putting the ball at the knees. Not to say there weren't flashes of D-1 passing, but I feel like he would be much better off as a runningback or wide reciever in college (I would be surprised if any college coaches disagreed with me).

* Princeton will definitely have a good year this year. They more than doubled Moeller in offensive production, and were it not for two interceptions, probably would have walked away with a win. Both the offensive and defensive line still have a ways to go, but nothing to keep them from having a fun season.

* If the football team was even half as fun to watch as this when I were in school, I would have been very satisfied.

* The student section is really going downhill. A big Whiskey Tango Foxtrot to that one....

Thank you, Chad

This is EXACTLY why I am NOT a Bengals fan, I'm a Chad Johnson fan. The man tells it like it is, regardless of how it makes him look.

The fact is that the Bengals have actually regressed in the past two years. The fact is that Chad is both one of the best WR's in the NFL and 30 years old. Jerry Rice excluded, 30 is usually the beginning of the end for NFL athletes. I have no problem with Chad getting antsy about wanting to be on a team that can win. Now.

Finally, someone in the organization is showing a sense of urgency. Someone in the organization is pressuring others to exceed expectations. Someone in the organization is not getting on the news for assault....oh wait. Nevermind.

In regards to the last story, finally Marvin (or maybe not....maybe Brown made the first good decision of his ownership) has grown a sack and righted a wrong he made on draft day a couple years ago. Now, as much as it sucks, cut Pollack and Odell, and all will be right. People that cannot play on Sunday have no reason to be getting a paycheck. This is a business, treat it like one.

For the record, if Chad ends up anywhere else, I will be the first to buy his new jersey.

Sunday, February 3, 2008

I'm not even mad.

Great game, probably, no, easily the best since the Rams/Titans (oilers?) Super Bowl so many years ago.

I find it very cool that the person to catch the game-winning catch, David Tyree, had not caught a touchdown all season. The "underdog" player gave the underdog team what it needed to get over the top. It's hard not to like that.

Witness, the only good play New England made all game. A gift interception.

Generic Super Bowl Prediction Post

Patriots win, but it's a close game. Giants cover the 12 point spread.

Then again, the only Super Bowl blowout I can remember involved the G-men and a certain Ray Lewis and Co. I had more important things to do that night, like play Driver 2. Seriously. You could hijack every car in the game! Talk about endless possibilities!!

OT: I never want to hear that GTA 3 redefined gaming again. Talk about blast from the past...

To elaborate...

Watch this:

Now, in the interest of impartiality, watch this:

Why would I show videos of the Georgia Tech defense absolutely manhandling its opponents, you ask? Why, especially, is one of those opponents Notre Dame? Because the former Georgia Tech defensive coordinator, Jon Tenuta was announced as the Assistant Head Coach and/or Linebackers Coach for that 3-9 team in South Bend.

Yes wayz Lolrus, yes wayz

Now why am I so freakin JACKED AND PUMPED for the next couple years, you ask?

Let's start with the currently #1 ranked recruiting class for 2008.

Then let's proceed to the fact that next year's defense will have arguably no connection to the defenses of 2005 and 2006. Remember those teams? here's a refresher:

There is also the slim hope from this past year that it was a bunch of freshman and sophmores (with the occasional junior sprinkled in) getting their collective asses handed to them every week. Seeing that pissed me off a lot, I'm sure each of them feeling it pissed at least a few of them off too. I like anger. Anger is the key to the dark side. You ever seen Darth Vader? There's a reason no one ever plays a pickup game with him.

Basically, it just feels good to have one guy that has been a thorn in Weis's side for the past two years actually join forces. The optimist in me says that Tenuta is going to go in on day one and say, "Here is why I teabagged you last year." Then he'll walk over to Evan Sharpley and say, "Sorry for teabagging you, frosh," and walk away with a little chuckle (see "pissed off" paragraph for reason why).

Get the laughs in now ladies. If Notre Dame still sucks in 2009, I'll wear USC clothes for a year and worship Bo Shembelcher (spelling intended), who by the way never won a national championship, or a big ten championship, or the rose bowl (fun fact) like a GOD.

That is all. I'm gonna go headbutt something hard.

No way.

Can't talk too much now, but just heard that Jon Tenuta will be joining the ND staff this year, with secondary coach Bill Lewis retiring. Two things:

1.) Tenuta is widely regarded as the best defensive coordinator in college right now.. This is a huge get.

2.) Hopefully this doesn't hurt recruiting.

Two is much more important than 1

Sorry, I suck

Something about having all the time in the world and nothing to do has caused me to play a lot of Battlefield 1942, and cease to exist on the interwebs. Don't worry, it's not you, it's me. I haven't even dugg anything lately. Here is a little of what I have done.

I saw Charlie Wilson's War a few weeks ago. Yes, this has been an unprecedented movie-going binge for me. I can FINALLY say that I have found a movie that I like that doesn't necessarily end happily. I went to go see it with Stinky (my version of "the girl" because she is white like casper and well, the name fits) so she was able to help me out on who was playing what part. I knew Tom Hanks was Charlie but other than that I was oblivious. Let me just say that Philip Seymour Hoffman is in my opinion a vastly under-rated actor. He has an astonishing range of characters, from Truman Capote to his (very well played) role as the straight-shooting CIA agent Gust Avrakotos here. Overall this was a very enjoyable movie. Tom Hanks, as always, impresses.
Oh, and apparently Julia Roberts was in it too. I didn't notice. Stinky helped me out on that one. Woops.

I also bought a CD that I already had acquired through other means. Three of them actually. With Ruckus there is very little motivation for me to buy a CD for the next three or so years. And, admittedly, through other perfectly innocent means that will not be talked about on the interwebz I haven't really bought a CD in years. I want to change that. This is half-guilt and half-having-extra-fundage probably (thanks Santa) but something can be said for having a permanent hard copy of my favorite artists, and (in a more cynical manner) speaking with the dollar. I figure, the more Jay-Z (American Gangster) and Nas (Greatest Hits) CDs I buy (I got both of these), the greater the sale of quality rap, hopefully keeping Soulja Boi away from my local house party. Hurl. I may be a minnow in the Atlantic, but if this minnow hears one more get rich quick single he will go postal. OK, not really, but it's annoying.
If you're curious, the other CD I got was Brand New's latest "The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me." I've loved this one since the leaks before release (im SOOO undergroundz lollz!!!) and was finally funded enough to buy a copy, open it once to rip it to the comp, then put it in a safe place for if I ever need it again. If nothing else, Brand New is a band that has repeatedly reinvented themselves. Every time (in my opinion), they have gotten better and better. Very excited for the future there.

I've also delved even deeper into my sick, sad obession of college football. Recruiting year is heavily upon us, with the major high school all american games being played this coming Sunday (on NBC and ABC). Overall there are 14 Notre Dame verbal commits playing in either the Army All American Bowl (on NBC, and the older of the two) or Under-Armor Bowl (ABC, sponsored by ESPN). It's amazing that with as shitty of a year 2007 was for the Irish, they can still have arguably the #1 recruiting class in college football. If this holds to February, with top-10 classes the past two years, maybe not next year but at the very least 2009 is something to look forward to. Recruiting rankings are far from a sure-fire promise for success, but having depth of talent sure does help. Ask Southern Cal.

Oh, and how bout them Flyers? Big win vs. Pitt the other night and it looks like they could be a legit team for the tourny. All that is left is a run of the A-10 with possibly a loss to Xavier and one other team and it would be impossible to keep them out. Very cool.

Brian Roberts: Dickie V's "Best Player You've Never Heard Of"

Sorry for the long delay. This is like that awkward call to the parents for money after three weeks of silence or something. Hopefully it won't happen again.
